Uruma City was established on April 1, 2005, through the merger of Gushikawa City, Ishikawa City, Katsuren Town, and Yonashiro Town. The name "Uruma City" was also adopted on the same date. This name was selected from a nationwide contest held before the merger. "Uruma" means "coral island" and has long been used as a poetic name for Okinawa. Uruma City includes the Katsuren Peninsula and eight islands. Five of these islands—Ikei Island, Miyagi Island, Henza Island, Hamahiga Island, and Yabuchi Island—are connected to the Katsuren Peninsula by Kaichu-doro, a road that runs over the sea, as well as by bridges, making travel between them possible. Notably, the 4.7 km-long Kaichu-doro connecting the Katsuren Peninsula and Henza Island is a popular driving route.
